Obituary for Robert Kenneth Quattrochi

Robert K. Quattrochi passed away at home on Nov. 16 at the age of 87, after a brief illness. He was born in Pittsfield, Mass. on Dec. 6, 1926, the son of Peter and Ernestine Quirico Quattrochi. A graduate of Pittsfield High School, Bob received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in 1949. During World War II, Bob enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves as an Electronic Technician. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946 with the rank of ETM 3rd class. After working as a Mechanical Design Engineer at the Pittsfield General Electric Ordnance Department for two years, he was invited to join the family automobile business, Pete's Motors, founded by his father. He later served as President and CEO of the dealerships in Pittsfield and Great Barrington, Mass. After 57 years in the Automobile business, he sold the dealerships and retired to private life. A widely respected, successful businessman, Bob committed his adult life to working for the betterment of the local community. He was active in a number of Berkshire County Organizations, serving on the board of the First Agricultural Bank, the regional board of the Bank of Boston, and the board of the Country Club of Pittsfield, where he was an active member and served as President for two years. Bob was the director of The Berkshire Historical Society, and served as the President of the Pittsfield Kiwanis Club. Additionally, Bob served the city as a member of the Pittsfield Licensing Board, first appointed in September 2003. Bob was also a long-time member of The Central Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, where he served as Chairman and board member. He was also elected as the first President of Pittsfield Central, then a downtown development organization, which later merged with Downtown Associates to form Downtown Pittsfield, Inc. He was President of Downtown Pittsfield for 13 years, and was later elected as a lifetime member of the board and continued to sit on the Membership and Ethnic Fair committees. He chaired the Board of the Berkshire Medical Center, and, more currently, sat on both the Finance Committee and the BMC Golf Tournament Committee, of which he was a founding member. Additionally, he served on the Board of Berkshire Health Services for three years. Bob also dedicated his time to several business-related organizations, acting as Director and Treasurer for The Massachusetts State Auto Dealers Association, Chairman of The National Subaru Dealer Advisory Council, and the New England Representative on the National Chrysler/Plymouth Dealer Advisory Council for six years. He also served on the New England Chrysler-Jeep Advertising Association for many years. Additionally, Bob was a longtime member of the Board of Trustees of Hancock Shaker Village (HSV), acting as both Chairman and Treasurer of the board and the Chairman of the HSV Business Partners Committee. At the time of his death, Bob was a Trustee Emeritus and member of the Executive Committee. Bob was honored by many local organizations for his commitment to service. In 1984, he received the Rotary's David Kagan Award For Service Above Self. Berkshire United Way recognized Bob's service as a solicitor and member of the Allocations Committee with the Robert K. Agar, Jr. Volunteerism Award in 1996. In 2008, Bob was honored with the Berkshire Heath Systems Board of Trustees' Francis X. Doyle Award in recognition of his many decades of community service. More recently, Bob received the Brien Center Volunteer Recognition Award for exceptional commitment and dedication to the development of the Brien Center Downtown Campus. A committed member of the UNICO and CIAO service clubs, Bob was recognized as an outstanding Italian-American for his extraordinary generosity to his community on numerous occasions. Bob was honored with the UNICO Lifetime Achievement Award and the Una Serata Italiana Award by the Berkshire Lyric Theater, Inc. This past September, CIAO recognized Bob with the Outstanding Italian-American Award, presented to a Berkshire County resident of Italian heritage who made significant contributions to the local community. In addition to his commitment to local civic and community organizations, Bob dedicated himself to serving his local parish, St. Mark's Church. He served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister, and sat on the parish Finance Board. Bob was a well-known volunteer at many parish functions, committing countless hours to volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Bob shared his life with his wife, Kathryn Collier Quattrochi of Pawling, N.Y., whom he married May 16, 1953. Together, they made their home on Onota Lake in the Berkshires, where Bob enjoyed gardening, boating, and spending time with his family and loyal Weimaraner companions. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Ernestine Quirico Quattrochi, and his older brother, Peter. Bob is survived by his wife, Kathryn, their four daughters, Susanne Quattrochi (Craig Gilkes) of Bedford, N.Y., Joanne Quattrochi of Pittsfield, Robin Fernsell of Walpole, N.H., and Karen Bauer (Kevin Bauer) of Manchester, Conn., and his seven grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew Gilkes, Jack Quattrochi, Madeleine and Alison Fernsell, and Katie and Hanna Bauer.
