Obituary for Ruth Cheney Hendricks (Smith)

Ruth Cheney Hendricks died on January 28, 2017, at Westminster-Canterbury. She was the wife of the late Reverend Walter F. Hendricks, Jr, Episcopal priest at St Luke’s Richmond, Va. She is survived by her son, the Reverend W. Frisby Hendricks III and daughter-in-law JeanAnn, and their children, Walter Frisby IV “Cary” and wife Laura, Geoffrey and Christopher Hendricks; daughter, Jean Rollins and son-in-law Richard and their child Betsy Stanley and husband Will and great-grandchildren Carter and Kate Stanley; and daughter, Margaret Zack and son-in-law Peter, and their children Sanno and fiancé Ed Scott, Britta Scherpf and husband Chris, and great-grandchild Everett Scherpf, Annika and husband James deKay. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Smith College, class of 1941. She was a member of ESCRU, the Episcopal Society for Cultural and Racial Unity, and proudly participated in the march on Washington in 1963. As a rector’s wife, she served in many capacities but enjoyed mostly her involvement with the Junior Choir. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 2 at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, the Rt. Rev. Shannon Johnson presiding and the Rev. Lee Hutchson preaching, followed by the internment 10 a.m. Saturday, February 4, at Westlawn Cemetery in Williamstown, Mass.
