Obituary for Florence "Jackie" Udel

Florence Udel, best known by family and friends as Jackie, resided at Sweetwood in Williamstown until her death on Feb. 2, 2013. Jackie died peacefully in her home at the age of 91. She was lovingly cared for by hospice and the Sweetwood staff during her final days. Jackie was the daughter of Pauline and Jacob Mayerberg and spent most of her life living and working in Baltimore. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernie, in June of 2012. They enjoyed a marriage spanning 66 years and they were deeply in love. Jackie was also predeceased by her two sisters, Carol and Ray.

In Baltimore, Jackie was employed for 30 years by the City of Baltimore. She energetically taught in public elementary schools and became an instructional specialist, traveling from school to school, mentoring her peers and modeling effective teaching techniques. She later served as an elementary principal in Baltimore and her schools were often cited for academic excellence.

At the request of the governor, she served on the Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland in the 1980s. During her tenure, she was the only member of the commission to serve without a degree in law. The Grievance Commission provided citizens with the opportunity to have grievances about their legal representation heard by a fair and unbiased body. Jackie held two degrees, including a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maryland and a Masters in Education from John Hopkins University. While living in Baltimore, she and Bernie attended lectures at Hopkins and enjoyed their membership in the faculty club where they hosted friends and family on special occasions.

Jackie especially loved to entertain by preparing sumptuous meals on beautiful table settings. She took delight in tending to flowers and plants and she created an indoor garden in one of their Baltimore homes, complete with miniature waterfalls and pools of goldfish. When she and Bernie moved to Sweetwood 18 years ago, she became actively involved in the greenhouse on the premises.

They forged many close friendships at Sweetwood, attending plays and lectures at Williams College and swimming several times each week at the YMCA in North Adams. They took special delight in attending concerts at Tanglewood and picnicking at North Pond. They also enjoyed travel and took great delight in showing slides of their many adventures.

Jackie leaves nephews, Richard, Steve and Larry Silber, Tom Glass, Edward and Lisa Udel and their families.
