Obituary for Frederick Schenck Scarborough
Frederick Schenck Scarborough passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Monday, December 24, 2018.
Fred was born on July 21, 1923 in Kennebunkport, ME to William and Dorothy (Schenck) Scarborough. He grew up in Englewood, NJ, spent summers in Kennebunkport, ME, and attended the Arizona Desert School and Deerfield Academy. Fred was a proud alumnus of Williams College, member of the Class of 1945, and long-time resident of Williamstown, MA.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Fred enrolled in the V-12 Navy College Training Program at Williams College. His service included teaching navigation at Columbia University and acting as a navigator for two years onboard the USS Macon. After his service in the U.S. Navy, Fred returned to Williams College where he graduated in 1948 with a major in Chemistry.
Fred remained in Williamstown after college, working first at the Warren Wire Company before moving on to the Sprague Electric Company, where he spent 36 years in various management positions, including heading up the company’s electronic filter division.
Throughout his life, Fred was a passionate sportsman who shared his knowledge and spread his love for the outdoors with family and friends alike. Fred was a talented horseman, who drew on the experiences he gained from riding the Wyoming range as a cowboy in his teens, to become a nationally ranked polo player and umpire “back East”, and then to teach his children how to ride and care for horses. A gentleman farmer, Fred was as comfortable creating windrows with his Allis-Chalmers as he was in a boardroom, and for years his plantation of carefully tended-to blue spruce, Fraser and balsam firs was the source of Christmas trees and wreaths for many Berkshire County homes. A man with a wide range of interests, he also enjoyed sailing, bird hunting, tennis, skiing – and quietly tinkering around in his barn.
Fred’s engagement in civic activities included serving on the board of the former North Adams Regional Hospital, the Vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Williamstown, MA, and as National Ski Patroller #1202 at Bromley Mountain, VT.
Frederick Scarborough is survived by his wife, Jane (Gay) Klaus Scarborough, and children, Merrihew Scarborough (David Schreiner), Cynthia Lannon, Frederick Scarborough (Tammi Rice), Susan Schulz (Bob), Kristen Klaus (Pete Madej), Marc Klaus (Cecilia), and Katrina Klaus (Carl Wied.) He was beloved by his grandchildren, Katherine (Josh Kimball), Jenny, Jordan, Samantha, Jason, Billy, Jack, Frederika, Emilie, Nina, Max, and Avery. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William Scarborough, his sister, Nancy Angier, his first wife, Faith Rice Scarborough, and his son-in-law, Daniel G. Lannon.
The family would like to thank Steven Michalenko of At Home TLC, Stephanie, Patty and Laurie of Hospice Care in the Berkshires, and the wonderful staff and caregivers at Sweetwood for all their tender loving care.
The funeral service for Frederick Schenck Scarborough to be held on Saturday, January 12th at 1 o’clock pm at St John’s Episcopal Church in Williamstown, MA has been postponed and will be scheduled for a later date.
