Obituary for Sarah Campbell McFarland

Sarah Campbell McFarland, 82, of Williamstown, MA died on Tuesday January 12, 2021 at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, VT. She was born in Anderson, IN on May 7, 1938 a daughter of the late Donald Troy Campbell and Virginia (Shortridge) Campbell. She attended George Washington High School in Alexandria, VA where she was an outstanding tennis player. Her love for tennis carried with her throughout her life. After graduation she attended Purdue University and was active in the Purdue Players, a theatrical group on campus. She was elected into the honorary Theatrical Society, Beta Alpha Phi.
Sarah’s career included 20 years as a librarian at Williams College and concluded in teaching at Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, where she taught a varied number of courses. She was the kind of teacher every high school should have. She taught good study habits while entertaining her students with funny stories derived from her world travels. By the time the girls were seniors, they knew they had not only an excellent teacher, but also a trustworthy friend. She received the Teacher of the Year a number of times and in a rare honor, two different senior classes dedicated their yearbook to her.
Sarah was a delightful companion. She traveled extensively visiting 65 countries and all seven continents. She was an avid reader in history, philosophy, and ethics and towards the end of her life, donated her very considerable personal library to Miss Hall’s School. She loved opera, theater, politics, detective stories, and sports. She was a die-hard Williams College football fan.
Sarah is survived by five cousins.
