Obituary for Rose Mary Young (Burk)

Rose Mary Burk (Wetherell) Young, 87, of Hancock died Thursday September 23, 2021 at her home. She was born in Hudson Falls, NY on February 23, 1934, the only child of the late James J & Lillian (Ethier) Burk. At a young age she and her mother moved to Pittsfield, near family. In 1946, her mother married Harvey Shufelt. They became a “his, hers and our family”.
Rose Mary attended schools in Pittsfield. She graduated from Pittsfield High School, the class of 1952. Rose Mary worked many jobs over the years, from working for the telephone company, being a teacher’s aide, a manager of a laundry mat, administrative secretary to more recently a home aid for Home Instead Senior Care. She was a resilient, “can do” woman.
No matter where Rose Mary lived, she was deeply involved in church activities. She hosted bible studies in her home. She loved to sing her heart out in church. Rose Mary was a long time member of Pittsfield’s First Baptist Church. More recently, she was a member of the Hancock Baptist Church and a parishioner of the Blackinton Union Church. Rose Mary married Richard Young at the Blackinton Union Church on 11/14/2015 in a joyous wedding. They were devoted to each other in their twilight years.
Life was not always easy for her, but she always had her faith in God that sustained her. She was an amazing, devoted wife, mom, “Nana Rose”, and “Great Nana”. Her family could always count on her.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Nelson Young, daughters Kathleen Rice (Bob) of Pittsfield, MA; Sheila Bleau ( Robert) of DeLeon Springs, FL and Addison, VT; her son James W. Wetherell ( Suzi ) of Palm Harbor, FL, and a sister, Susan Bennett (Jim); ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren and devoted cat, “Tiger”. She adored us all as we adored her. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers PVT George Shufelt (killed in Vietnam), David Shufelt, daughter Marie Wetherell (2010), grandson Matthew Rice (2018) and former husband, James F. Wetherell (2010).
