Obituary for Dorothy Lynch O'Brien (Lynch)

Dorothy (Lynch) O’Brien, 100, of Williamstown, MA and Manhasset, NY passed peacefully on Thursday November 17, 2022. She was born in Bronx, NY on March 28, 1922, to James and Gertrude (née Kipp) Lynch. She attended local schools in the Bronx and graduated from College of New Rochelle, New York in 1943. On July 11, 1950, she married Miles O’Brien. They shared 41 years before his passing in January 1991. Miles and Dorothy spent much of their married life living in Long Island, NY and settled in Manhasset in 1967 where they built a life and raised their four children. She was a long-time communicant of St. Mary’s Parish in Manhasset. After graduation from college,
Dorothy was devoted to her career where she worked for Vogue Pattern Book initially for the editor then as Fashion Editor. She had varied interests and was always up for an adventure. Some of her favorite things were traveling, gardening, cooking, attending theater and arts events in NYC, fashion, skiing, and raising her family. Favorite travel destinations included Italy, France, Russia, and Greece. When not traveling you could always find Dorothy tending to her garden, planning next year’s plantings, or reading the New York Times. Throughout her life Dorothy also loved spending summers with her family in Hampton Bays enjoying the beach, boating, and water skiing. Through her mid 70’s she continued to ski and took an occasional horseback ride. She instilled a love of skiing in her children and grandchildren as she would take them on frequent ski trips to Vermont and the Berkshires. She loved spending time with her grandchildren whether it was on the ski slopes, in the kitchen, or traveling.
In 2018 Dorothy moved to Williamstown and made wonderful new friends. Her family and friends were on hand in March 2022 to celebrate her milestone 100th birthday in Lenox, MA. Dorothy leaves her children, Peter and his wife Elaine of Gardner, CO; Ann of NYC; Andrew of Port Washington, NY; and Charles and his wife Lisa of Williamstown, MA. Her grandchildren, whom she adored, include Cory, Elizabeth, Jason, and great-grandson (and master fisherman) Hunter. Dorothy had a wonderful extended family and is survived by her sister Mary Elizabeth; sister-in-law Gail; and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother James, and grandson Michael.
