Agnes Creighton “Nan” (Ross) Witto, 96 of Stamford, VT died on Saturday December 31, 2022 at Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington.
She was born in Greenock, Scotland on October 15, 1926, a daughter of William Marsden Ross and Catherine “Kate” (Connell) Ross. She came to the United States as a child and attended North Adams Schools, graduating from Drury High School. Nan graduated from North Adams State College with a bachelor’s degree in Education. She later received her master’s degree in Special Education from Westfield State College.
Nan worked as an elementary school teacher in Florida, Savoy, Clarksburg, Monroe and Stamford Schools for many years. She was a devoted member of the Stamford Community Church and was also a member of the Daughters of Scotia. Nan was a gifted singer and was the soprano/soloist at the First Congregational Church of North Adams for many years. She was also a member of the Heptones and the North Adams Kilty Band. Nan enjoyed riding around in her convertible and also enjoyed swimming, arts and crafts, and reading. Above all, her faith was important to her and she loved the Lord.
Agnes was the widow of Arnold Roy Witto who died on October 30, 1980. They were married on June 26, 1948. Agnes leaves her daughters, Cathy-Ann Witto Chapman of Adams, MA and Heather-Lynn Witto Tietgens (John) of Stamford, Vt. She also leaves six grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Chapman, Katelynn Witto Miner (Jesse), Jessica Ann Langenback (Jason), John Christian Tietgens III (Cat), Jacob Arnold Tietgens, and Jillian Ellen Tietgens; 9 great grandchildren- Pedro, Jeremiah, Lillian, Samuel, Jase, Josie, June, Jamie and Jade and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Arnold Ross Witto who died on August 11, 1975 and a sister, Margaret Leckie Ross Walker.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A funeral to celebrate the life of Nan Witto will be on Monday, January 9, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Stamford Community Church. Burial will be in the spring in Clarksburg Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Sunday, January 8, 2023 from 5:30-7:00 PM at the Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Homes- WEST CHAPEL 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA 01247.
