Obituary for Janie Linfield "Lynn" Hood

Janie Linfield Hood
November 3, 1939 - January 21, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janie Linfield Hood, a precious mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, on January 21, 2023, at her home in Pownal, Vermont. She was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, on November 3, 1939, to Clarence and Janie Hood. Lynn, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, brought her warm and welcoming Southern hospitality north to Vermont, creating a home that was always open to loved ones.

Lynn had a thirst for adventure and travel. Her desire to experience the world took her to many exotic places, including Lucca, Sardinia, India, and even a stint living in Zimbabwe with her husband, Bob Peck. Before moving to Pownal in 1975, Lynn resided in New York City, where she and her first husband, John Moyant, owned the Gaslight Cafe, a music venue in Greenwich Village.

Throughout her life, Lynn was a jack of all trades. She cofounded and coedited the Yankee Horse Trader, was employed at Bennington College in the Development office, and worked for the Office on Aging in Williamstown, MA. An artist at heart, Lynn brought her keen eye and sense of whimsy to her work as a quilt maker, potter, and painter.

She found her true love and companion in Bob, her husband of 28 years. The home they created together in Pownal was a regular gathering place for family and friends. Her true joy in life was raising Janie and John, and she cherished her time with them and their children. Lynn was also known for adding ice cubes to her glass of milk, a quirk that her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews all loved about her.

Lynn is survived by her children, son John Moyant and daughter Janie Linfield Moyant Burke (Patrick); grandchildren Emily (Sean Mitchell) and Olivia Moyant and Trevor, Riley, and Griffin Burke; and great-granddaughter, Maebh Mitchell. She is also survived by her brother, John Bell Hood (Judy), her brother-in-law, John Leach, and Bob and Lynn's ever-faithful dog, Sophie. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Cindy Schneider, who was a steadfast caregiver to both Bob and Lynn.

Also surviving Lynn are Bob Peck's four children from his first marriage, Robert Chapman Peck, James Wesley Peck (Anne Marie Keegan Peck), Cary Liisa Peck, and Jonathan Thanh Danh Harris Peck (Zelda Harris Peck), as well as grandchildren Julien, Abigail, Collin, Jameson, Arielle, Anderson, Joshua, Jonathan, and Wesley.

Lynn was predeceased by her husband, Robert Peck; three siblings Gene Hood, Sam Hood, Robin Hood Leach; and sister-in-law, Alix Dobkin.

Lynn's life was one of love, compassion, and hope, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace and be forever remembered in our hearts. A memorial service will be held for family and close friends on Saturday, January 28th, at 1:00pm at the Williams Inn, Williamstown, MA.
