Obituary for John Salatino
John Salatino, 92 of Pittsfield, MA died at his home March 16, 2023 after a long battle with dementia. Born in Polia, Calabria, Italy on January 29, 1931, he was the son of Antonio and Caterina (Malta) Salatino. He attended schools in Italy until coming to the U.S. at age of 16. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1950.
John was a U.S. Air Force staff sergeant veteran of the Korean War. As a master carpenter he was a project manager at Berkshire Medical Center, where he worked for more than 20 years retiring at the age of 80. Previously he worked with various area contractors throughout Berkshire County and was a member of the School Board Needs Committee.
He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church, a member of the Pittsfield City Democratic Committee and a longtime member of the Sons of Italy and the Faccioli Club. John will surely be remembered for his homemade wine and impressive vegetable and flower gardens. All his life he enjoyed making things and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Suzanne (Marshall) Salatino whom he married on May 7, 1960 in St. Joseph's Church. Three daughters: Julie Salatino (Tim Supranowicz), Lisa Provencher (Hannah) of Pittsfield, MA, Jean Salatino (Steven Gandolfo) of Sebastopol, CA and his son, Rev. John C. Salatino, Pastor of St. Mary's Church in Westfield. He also leaves two grandchildren: Mari Provencher (Jason Blagman) of Los Angeles, CA and Sofia Gandolfo of Sebastopol, CA. He leaves a brother, Anthony (Bettina) Salatino of Pittsfield, MA, who he was always quick to tell you is 100 years old, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by two sisters and one brother including Angelina Mangiardi, Maryanna Penna and Joseph Salatino.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A concelebrated Liturgy of Christian Burial for John Salatino will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at St. Mark's Church with his son, Rev. John C. Salatino as the principal celebrant. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive family and friends from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery at a later day.
