Obituary for William R. Keyes
WILLIAM R. KEYES,
passed on the 14th of March, at BMC in Pittsfield. A fifteen year resident of Williamstown, he lived for many years in Lenox. He was born on th 26th of February 1938 in Boston to William H. and Mary T. (Dolan) Keyes, attended Dedham schools, and was a 1959 graduate of Holy Cross with a degree in Physics. He met Elaine Kerns when they both worked at MIT, and they married on September 18th 1965 in Chestnut Hill. Bill worked for many years as a civil engineer for the Mass DPW, and later at Simon’s Rock.
Besides his beloved wife Elaine, he leaves three sons: Robert ‘Bob’ of Monson, Maine, Brian (Lena) of Chantilly, Virginia, and Edward ‘Ted’ (Andrea) of Los Angeles, cousins in Boston, Ireland, and elsewhere, and friends throughout.
Bill and Elaine were enticed to move to the Berkshires in part because of their love of Tanglewood and the scenic beauty of the area which Bill enjoyed with many hikes in Pleasant Valley, Gould Meadows, Bullard Woods, and other locations. He was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Pats, and Holy Cross Crusaders. He enjoyed his three trips to Ireland and cruise to Bermuda.
For him, Kindness was the greatest virtue a person could have, and he projected this through his kind and generous manner. While a soft-spoken gentleman, he did not hide his views and opinions. His voice, with a trace of a Boston accent sometimes shining through in spite of his 57 years in Berkshire County, will carry his words of kindness in the hearts and minds of his family forever.
