James Connell Nicol, 101 of North Adams, MA died Wednesday November 23, 2016 at North Adams Regional Hospital.
He was born in Kinross, Scotland on April 23, 1915 son of David and Mary (Connell) Nicol. He came to the United States at age 8 and attended schools in Clarksburg and North Adams. He graduated from the Drury High School and the Bliss Business College.
Mr. Nicol was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Navy where he was stationed at Pearl Harbor as a petty officer first class.
Mr. Nicol was first employed at the Strong-Hewat Woolen Mill and then joined the Sprague Electric Co. where he worked in various management positions for over 30 years until his retirement in 1979.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Adams where he was a former Deacon and Superintendent of the Sunday School. James was a longtime member of the Northern Berkshire YMCA where he swam one mile every day. He was a member of Scottish Clan McIntyre where he served as Chief. He also played bagpipes in the North Adams Kiltie Band. James was also a member of the North Adams Elks and the Berkshire Lodge of Masons.
His wife was Eunice Margaret (Collier) Nicol who died on April 30, 1997. They were married on November 18, 1939.
Survivors include two sons- James C. Nicol Jr. and his wife, Hazel of Avon, CT and John C. Nicol of North Adams with whom he lived. He also leaves two grandchildren- Kim Goff and her husband, Brian of Kenilworth, IL and Scott K. Nicol and his wife, Lynne of Huntersville, NC; seven great grandchildren including Tyler Goff, Alexander Goff, Sarah Goff, Connor Goff, Matthew Nicol, James Nicol, and Shane Nicol; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by one sister and one brother- Jean Mattimore and Charles Nicol.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for James Nicol will be Monday November 28, 2016 at 11:00 AM at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday morning from 9-11 AM.
