Obituary

Mildred (Millie) Anne Burger Mazzu formerly of North Adams, MA died peacefully at the age of 93 on January 1, 2021 in Venice, FL, where she had made her home since 2016. She was born June 8, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Mary (McCauley) Burger. Millie attended local Brooklyn parochial schools and was a graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY, where she attained her Bachelor of Nursing degree.
She was married to Dr. Arthur Mazzu, a long time North Adams family physician, whom she married September 10, 1949. Her husband predeceased her in death, May 23, 1993. Millie met her husband at St. Mary’s Hospital where she was a nurse in training while he completed his residency. After their wedding, they moved to Ft. Knox, KY where Dr. Mazzu served in the army prior to being deployed to Korea at the start of the Korean War. After the war, she moved to North Adams with her husband to raise their family. Millie was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and occasional medical secretary for her husband.
An active communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, the former St. Anthony’s Church, Millie served as a long time religious education teacher and Rosary Society member, where she served in many capacities and held many different officer positions. She also served as a Eucharistic minister and lector, and was a dedicated worker for the St. Anthony annual bazaar. Millie was also a member of the Jollee Circle Club and the St. Anthony Bowling League.
Millie’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. Millie leaves behind her children; Dr. Arthur Mazzu, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth (Toohey) of Venice, FL , Maryrose Calnan, of Clarksburg, MA, Anne Cleary of Springfield, MA, Joseph Mazzu and his wife Lisa of Haymarket, VA., and Robert Mazzu and his wife Lisa of North Adams, MA; grandchildren, Gregory Mazzu and his wife Ericka, Dr. Daniel Calnan and his wife Heather, Andrea Mazzu and her fiancé, Daniel Riffe, Amanda Mazzu and her fiancé Greg Caple, Luke Mazzu, Adam Mazzu, Maria Mazzu and Michael Mazzu; great-grandchildren, Evelyn Mazzu and Remington Calnan.
Millie was predeceased by her siblings Eileen (Matthew) Gleason, Iona (Charles) Hanney, Edith Burger, Lucille (William) McEntee, Lorraine Hoffman, and James (Stacia) Burger. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews including her goddaughter, Iona Malanchuk.
The name Mildred means “gentle strength,” which she personified. She always showed kindness and generosity to all with the mildest manner, and the greatest heart. She also had a soft spot for animals. Her love and life will always be remembered.

Dear Arthur, Mary Rose, Anne, Joseph, Bobby & families,
Your Mom kept in touch with us frequently throughout the years after your Dad died. We always looked forward to her newsy letters and phone calls. She frequently told us how proud she was of each of you. I was so glad Arthur made it possible for her to call and we were able to speak with her last year. You have special memories of both of your parents. May her love warm your hearts and minds as you remember how much she loved each of you.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. May you find comfort in God's Word during these difficult days.
By His grace alone,
(Pastor) Bill & Marianne Plenge

In my heart I know that you and Uncle Arthur are smiling down on me from heaven. I know this because I remember, as a little boy, you both maintained smiles at my silly jokes whenever you visited my family in New York. I remember you as a beautiful person when I was young and you had remained that beautiful person when Lucy and I visited you in Ocala. Your remembrance of Lucy touched us deeply.
To me, you will always be my godmother and "Aunt Mum".
With deepest love for you and our sincerest condolences for your family,
Paul & Lucy Hoffmann
